The National Safety Council recognizes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. With 1.6 million accidents every year in the U.S. that involve a distracted driver, spreading awareness around this epidemic is more timely than ever. We hope you will join us and the National Safety Council in raising awareness around distracted driving.
Why is distracted driving so alarming?
The NSC conducted a survey that found that 47 percent of drivers are comfortable either texting manually or using voice controls. In reality, drivers who read and/or text while driving are 23 times more likely to get into an accident.
Without a fleet cell phone policy, companies are putting themselves at financial risk. One company in Texas was found liable and fined $21 million because one of their drivers crashed while talking on a hands-free headset in accordance with company policy.
What actions can you take?
The NSC is encouraging fleets to adopt a fleet cell phone policy. An effective cell phone policy can improve fleet and driver safety, prevent accidents and reduce financial risk. We put together a guide on what your fleet cell phone policy should cover and how to get buy-in from your drivers.
Use this Distracted Driving Awareness Month as an opportunity to create a cell phone policy and discourage distracted driving! Drive safely.
