How Shake-A-Leg Miami Keeps Its Fleet Ready and Mission Afloat
On Biscayne Bay, Shake-A-Leg Miami helps people with disabilities, veterans and families get on the water. Through Fleetio’s Jump Start Initiative, the nonprofit is replacing clipboards with coordinated maintenance, so more trips launch safely and students learn job-ready workflows.

Fleetio's Jump Start Initiative
For Shake-A-Leg Miami, the water is a pathway to independence. On Biscayne Bay, the nonprofit brings people with disabilities, as well as veterans and families onto the water to sail, paddle and learn, often turning first-time nerves into confidence by the time they return to the dock.
The water has healing qualities. Getting out there lets people explore new possibilities. Harry Horgan, President & Co-Founder
Shake-A-Leg’s boats aren’t just assets, they’re a source of peace. When we visited with Harry, he told us the story of one mother who regularly catches her only real rest of the week while staff and volunteers take her son sailing, knowing he’s safe and engaged.
On another day, a young participant on a ventilator feels open water and sun, and smiles for the first time in years.
Stories like these are why uptime matters at Shake-A-Leg. Every safe trip relies on boats that start, sails that hold, and checklists that stick.
A Mission that Depends on Uptime
Running an adaptive program means safety and reliability come first. Shake-A-Leg operates roughly 29 boats, and historically, depended on paper forms and clipboards to keep them ready, which works until something slips and a boat sits idle.
It’s been very difficult maintaining our boats and tracking the repairs. We used forms and clipboards. Harry Horgan, President & Co-Founder
That makes trends harder to spot, slows the response to issues, and steals time from where it counts: on the water.
In addition to getting out on the water, Shake-A-Leg’s marine vocational program teaches students real skills, from small-engine basics to rigging and dock work, so they can step into marine-industry roles. By pairing hands-on shop time with a modern maintenance system, students would get the opportunity to learn the entire service process – from repair to record-keeping.
The Jump Start Initiative
In 2024, Fleetio launched its annual Jump Start Initiative, inviting customers to nominate nonprofits for in-kind access to Fleetio. Shake-A-Leg was selected based on a nomination and introduction from Freedom Boat Club’s leadership, who’d seen Fleetio’s impact firsthand.
Fleetio’s technology gives us the opportunity to operate on a whole new level. Simplifying and automating our maintenance lets us be more proactive. Harry Horgan, President & Co-Founder
From Clipboards to Coordinated Care
With Fleetio, Shake-A-Leg can centralize inspections, schedule preventive maintenance, assign and track work orders, and capture parts and service history across the fleet – creating the steady rhythm a mission like Shake-A-Leg’s needs.
In the shop, students now learn not only how to rebuild a carburetor or change a propeller, but also how to log the work and close a digital ticket – skills they can carry into marine jobs after graduation.
Mike Rubin, a longtime volunteer and board member, sums it up: “Fleetio is a perfect match for what we do at Shake-A-Leg.”
| Before (Paper) | With Fleetio |
|---|---|
| Clipboards for inspections | Mobile inspections in Fleetio Go |
| PM dates on calendars | Scheduled PM with reminders |
| Ad-hoc repair tracking | Work orders with parts & labor logs |
| Lost history | Searchable service records |
How They'll Use Fleetio
As Shake-A-Leg continues to serve Miami’s community, Fleetio helps the team focus resources where they belong: on people, not paperwork. Fleetio is giving them access to:
- Centralized inspections and PM schedules
- Assignable work orders with status visibility
- Parts usage and costs tied to assets
- Student training that includes digital close-out
The Jump Start Initiative ensures more nonprofits have access to modern fleet maintenance technology, pairing the reliability of preventive maintenance with missions that change lives.
