How to Replace Windshield Wiper Blades

Step 1: Lift the Wiper Arms

  • Turn off the ignition and make sure the wipers are in their resting position.
  • Gently lift each wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in place.

Step 2: Remove the Old Wiper Blades

  • Find the release tab or clip where the blade connects to the arm.
  • Press or slide the release mechanism while pulling the old blade down and off the wiper arm.
  • If the wipers don’t slide off easily, check for a small latch that may need to be lifted with a flathead screwdriver.

Step 3: Attach the New Wiper Blades

  • Line up the new blade with the wiper arm’s hook or clip.
  • Slide the blade up into the arm until you hear a click or feel it lock in place.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it's secure.

Step 4: Lower the Wiper Arms & Test the Blades

  • Carefully lower the wiper arms back onto the windshield.
  • Start the vehicle and test the wipers with washer fluid to ensure they move smoothly without skipping or streaking.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to check wiper blade size. Wiper blades come in different sizes, and many vehicles use different lengths for the driver and passenger sides. Always check before buying replacements.
  • Letting the wiper arm snap back onto the windshield. If the wiper arm is left up and snaps back without a blade attached, it can crack or damage the windshield. Always lower the arm carefully.
  • Installing the blades upside down or incorrectly. Some blades may look symmetrical but only fit one way. If the wipers streak or make noise after replacement, double-check that they’re installed correctly.
